Above the Bed: Wall Art Ideas for a Calmer Bedroom
Share
The bedroom is the last room we see each night and the first each morning — and the wall above the bed is its natural focal point. Fill it well and the whole room exhales. Fill it wrong — too small, too loud, too high — and the room never quite settles.
What the Bedroom Wants
Living room art can perform; bedroom art should rest. The compositions that work above a bed share a temperament: organic forms over hard geometry, muted palettes over saturated ones, matte texture over gloss. Botanical work is the bedroom's native genre — nature is the oldest shorthand for calm.
The Sizes That Fit
The rule is the same two-thirds proportion that governs every wall above furniture — explained fully in our Wall Art Size Guide:
- Queen bed (60″) — a pair of 16×24 prints, or a single 24×36
- King bed (76″) — a 24×36 pair, or a wide three-piece composition
- Full or single — one 16×24, centred, is quietly perfect
Hang so the frame's bottom edge sits 6–10 inches above the headboard. Any higher and the art abandons the bed; any lower and it crowds the pillows.
Three Compositions That Always Work
The Single Statement. One work, centred over the bed — the most serene option and the most Japandi. A piece like the Black & Gold Botanical Vase holds the wall without raising its voice.
The Matched Pair. Two works from one palette, 2–3 inches apart, symmetrical over the bed's centre line. Symmetry is deeply restful — which is why hotels use it — and a curated set of two arrives already in agreement.
The Soft Triptych. Three pieces across a king-width wall, unified in tone. Choose the gentlest palette in the room — sage, clay, cream — and let repetition do the calming.
Palettes for Sleep
Muted terracotta warms without waking; sage green is the most scientifically restful hue in interiors; navy grounds a light room the way dusk grounds a day. What the bedroom does not want is high contrast at full saturation — save that for the living room. Our Bedroom Wall Art collection is drawn entirely from the restful end of the Vyloire palette.
A Practical Note on Weight and Glass
Art above a bed should be properly finished and securely hung — this is not the wall for taped posters. Every Vyloire framed piece arrives in premium oak, glazed, backed and fitted with hanging hardware, ready to mount firmly the day it arrives — with complimentary worldwide shipping and duties prepaid.
